Summer Reading Program 2008
(for children pre-school age through grade six)

Schedule of Events

June 18 & 19 at noon to 1 p.m.
Lunch Bunch Movie Munch
Bring a sack lunch and beverage and watch "Nancy Drew" on the big screen. Half the movie will be shown each day. Please pre-register for this event.

June 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Stir it Up!
Find out what’s cookin’ inside computers, sewing machines, phones and other small appliances and electronic gadgets. There will be many things to take apart and explore. Bring your own screwdriver and pliers if you can. Please pre-register for this event.

June 30 through July 3 during open
Library hours
Gadgets Galore Guessing Game
Lots of kitchen gadgets – both old and new. Figure out what they are used for and earn extra Deli-cious Dollars to spend at the Kids’ Corner Café.


July 8 at 2 p.m.
If You Give a Kid a Cookie
This annual Teens & Tots event will pair teen volunteers with small groups of children for an afternoon of cookie decorating and fun! Please pre-register for this event.

July 15 at 2 p.m.

Down on the Farm
What comes first – the chicken or the egg? Hobby farmer Denise Eastin will share her chickens, ducks and egg-ceptional facts about eggs. There might be some baby chicks to see, as well!

Spill the Beans Guessing Game
Guess how many beans are in the soup pot. Each entry will earn 1 Deli-icious Dollar and the closest guess will win 5 Deli-icious Dollars to spend at the Kids’ Corner Café.

Circus Minimus Puppetry
A La Carte: In a Fool’s Kitchen

A classic battle between a clown French chef and a wily lobster set to accordion music. Bring the whole family!

Happy Birthday Minnesota!
Celebrate Minnesota ’s 150th birthday with an old-fashioned birthday party for the whole family. Carmen Pacquin of Pacquins Sweet Harmony will demonstrate cake decorating. Bring the whole family for cake, cookies and party games galore! Please pre-register.

August 5 at 2 p.m.

Bread and Butter with Bob
Bob Perry, famous Breckenridge bread maker extraordinaire, will demonstrate bread making and share samples of his famous bread. Shake up your own fresh butter to spread on this delectable treat! Please pre-register.

August 12 at 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Pajama Rama Extravaganza
It’s a pajama party with food, fun and a film at this annual late night lock-in. Wear your PJs and bring a pillow and blanket to watch "Ratatouille." Play games, hang out with friends and spend the last of your Deli-icious Dollars at the Kids’ Corner Café! Please pre-register.

For every hour that children spend reading or being read to this summer, they can earn 1 Deli-icious Dollar to spend at the Kids’ Corner Café Library Store. The store will be open whenever the Library is open and will remain open until August 29 or until the shelves are bare! For every event they attend this summer, they will receive 2 Library Dollars!

These programs are free and a part of  the "Look What's Cookin' at your library" 2008 Minnesota Summer Reading Program. This cooking themed reading program encourages children to read over the summer. Studies show that students who don’t read over the summer are less prepared for school success in the fall. The summer reading program at Breckenridge Library makes summer reading more fun with special programs, good books, and reading incentives.

Teen Read 2008!

Teens are invited to stop by and register for the Teen program, start their reading log, register for special events, reserve their t-shirt and pick up a pledge sheet for the read-a-thon.

Midnight Rock: Read Around the Clock: Thursday, June 26 from noon to midnight

Join the Library read-a-thon for one hour or all twelve hours! Collect pledges from friends and family for this library fundraiser. Food and beverages will be provided throughout the event. Earn prize chances for every hour you read. Please pre-register for this event.

If You Give a Kid a Cookie:
Tuesday, July 8 at 2 p.m.

Annual “Teens and Tots” Event!
Be paired-up with younger children for cookie decorating and lots of fun!

Hobby Shop:
Wednesday, July 23 at 3 p.m.

Bring a pair of jeans to decorate with bleach pens and fabric paint, or work on other cool craft projects. All supplies will be provided.

Tour of the Town:
Thursday, Aug. 7, noon to 6 p.m.

A trip to Fargo/Moorhead to visit the old Fargo Theatre for a tour, silent movies and popcorn. Then it’s on the Barnes and Noble for browsing and buying. Last stop is Moorhead Library for pizza and grand prize drawings.

Readin' at the Old School House:
Friday, August 15 time TBA

Dress up in old-fashioned clothes and help the Library staff present an old-time Storytime at the Wilkin County Fair.


Family Night at the Movies
Bring the whole family or a few friends for a fun-filled Thursday evening at the Library.
Popcorn is provided. Bring your own beverage.

July 10 at 6 p.m.: The Water Horse PG
August 21 at 6 p.m.: Alvin & the Chipmunks PG

Junior Friends of the Library
The group does not meet during the summer months. Watch for information that will be sent home in early September with students in grades one through six at Breckenridge Elementary and St. Mary’s schools.

For children in first through sixth grades. To receive monthly notices, contact the Library at 643-2113.

Computer Training
There are no formal group classes offered during the summer months, but individual, one-on-one sessions are available by appointment. Topics include: Taming the Mouse - computer basics; Internet Basics; E-Mail for Everyone - setting up and using a YahooMail! Account and MS Word Basics and Intermediate levels. Contact the Library for more information.


Preschool Storytime

For children who are at least 3-years-old. Younger children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Each week a different theme is explored with books, fingerplays, songs, games and an occasional craft.

Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Storytime To Go
Storytime to Go is an outreach program offered to licensed home daycare providers. Check with your provider to find out if they are participating or call the Library for more information.

Breckenridge Bookmarkers Discussion Group

This group does not meet during the summer months, but if you would like to receive notices of upcoming discussions during the 2008-2009 school year, please contact the Library at 643-2113 or breckenridge@larl.org. A list of titles for the year will be available in early August.
