Crookston Branch - Library Associate II

Summary:

This is advanced and specialized paraprofessional work with supervisory responsibilities. Work is performed independently within established guidelines and under the general direction of the Hub Supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises and trains staff for public service operations, including: borrower registration, check in/out and shelving of materials, holds, over dues, daily accounting for cash receipts, computer/print management, marketing of materials, retrieval of items requested by branch customers (Paging List), and assists in developing related policies and procedures.
  • Participates in direct public service; assists customers in selecting and locating library materials, provides reader guidance; answers reference questions and assists customers in using reference sources, both print and electronic.
  • Plans, assigns, directs and reviews work of subordinate staff, volunteers, and community service workers; substitutes for staff as necessary; prepares performance evaluations and conducts formal and informal counseling; evaluates and rates employees’ performance.
  • Hires, discharges, disciplines and adjusts employee grievances in conjunction with Hub Supervisor, Regional Director and HR Director:
  • Mediates and resolves customer complaints and concerns.
  • Develops and executes adult programming designed to promote the library, reading, and information literacy.
  • Manages all library equipment: photocopies, microfilm reader-printer, computers, and scanners. May manage telephone and security systems, monitors and requisitions supplies.
  • Supervises the delivery of library materials and programs to homebound customers, senior centers and nursing homes.
  • Monitors public areas for neatness, proper location of materials, and general appearance.
  • Compiles and verifies data for statistical reports.
  • Participates in Regional Library committees, teams and projects.
  • Manages building facility in the absence of the Hub Supervisor.
  • Other duties consisting of similar or related tasks or of a logical work assignment to the position as directed by the Hub Supervisor and the Regional Library Director.

Competency:

  • Knowledge of standard library principles and procedures to include circulation procedures and information retrieval.
  • Current Supervisory skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other staff members.
  • Ability to successfully mediate solutions with difficult customers.
  • Ability to supervise and train subordinate personnel conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to plan, organize and complete daily work and special projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Strong commitment to excellent public and customer service.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with all ages in a pleasant and effective manner.
  • Independent judgment and initiative are required in applying library policies and in training and supervising personnel

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience:

  • 4-year degree from a college or university or other similar professional training .
  • Customer Service experience preferred.
  • 2 or more years of successful experience as a supervisor.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of books on many subjects.
  • Proficiency with computers and information technology.

Language Ability:

Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions in English and communicate well both orally and in writing.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid driver’s license required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises Library Assistants, Library Associates and volunteers.

Position requires the ability to stoop, reach, lift, retrieve and replace library materials and equipment and lift materials over 30 pounds, as well as move quickly throughout the building.

Specific vision abilities required are Close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The fingers are used to handle, feel and for keyboarding.

Occasional travel to other sites within the multi-county regional system and within the State of Minnesota required.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time salaried, exempt position requiring some evening/weekend hours.
  • Place of employment is the Crookston Branch with occasional travel to other branch libraries as required.
